Infrastructure & Cloud

Negotiable DOE

Seeking a Principal Systems Engineer for an internationally renowned company offering a cloud solution that is revolutionising the market. The ideal candidate is someone who will help rapidly innovate infrastructure that powers my clients platform.

Your primary responsibility is to continuously look for ways to create higher uptime and higher innovation (or lower friction) while getting features into production. In that context you will mainly work on the development- (developer productivity), deployment- (continuous delivery) and operations- (instrumentation and scalability) platforms. You will make best use of our bare metal and cloud resources to deliver value to the rest of the company and our customers.

The ideal candidate is someone who has previously worked in smaller (less than 500 people), multi-location startups, that went through phases of extensive growth and you know how to operate in these kinds of environments. For you, if something is not working, it is not a reason to get frustrated, but a reason to spring into action and create momentum in the organisation to fix it. At the same time you like to break things, when they need breaking. And you know, how to ask for forgiveness, because you forgot to ask for permission. You never leave something half broken or half fixed. You know how to lead and excite yourself and others. You like to work with other great engineers and you are not afraid to feel uncomfortable, because you are doing something for the first time. For you the optimal workplace cherishes high performance and no bullsh!t and allows everybody to be the best they can be (be good and true to yourself and others). You know how to make a promise and you know how to keep it and how to have fun getting there.

What you need:

  • An engineering mind-set coupled with operational discipline
  • Expertise in designing, analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems using modern tools
  • Ability to move fast and distinguish signal from noise in everyday work life
  • Sharp and tenacious troubleshooting skills that span systems, network, and code
  • Extremely sound knowledge of UNIX and TCP/IP network fundamentals
  • Configuration management expertise (Ansible, Chef, Salt, etc)
  • Expertise in version control, build and release best practices
  • Ability to rapidly learn new programming languages, frameworks and toolsets.
  • Ability to code really well in at least one language
  • Currently implementing or passionate about Infrastructure as code
  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience

Experience with any of the following:

  • Containerization (e.g Docker)
  • Orchestration (e.g. Mesos, fleet)
  • Service Discovery (e.g. etcd, consul)
  • Big data frameworks (e.g. Spark, Hadoop)

Traits that will distinguish the ultimate candidate:

  • Experience running web services globally and at scale
  • Deep understanding of IaaS/PaaS provider best practices (especially AWS)
  • Deep understanding of Unix systems internals and networking
  • Expertise in System, Network or Application Security
  • Particular skill with algorithms, data structures, complexity analysis and software design
  • Familiarity with functional programming concepts and reactive architecture.
