Software Engineer Jobs: 4 Tips To Stand Out From The Crowd.

To land one of the best software engineer jobs, you have to be the best. If you’re reading this, you’ve likely sent out a lot of CVs, received a few calls but you’ve not landed that interview yet. Don’t worry, it could be that you have all the knowledge and experience in the world but you’re just not presenting yourself in the best light.

In this short article, we are going to draw back the curtain on the recruitment industry and guide you through the top skills we as recruiters need to know to help you land your dream job.

What are you waiting for? Read on to learn more.

Show Me Your Code.

Part of recruiting for software engineer jobs is the screening process. This is where we call you, have a chat and see if we have a role that’s right for you.

This is your opportunity to show off what you can do. One of the first things we need to see is your approach to writing code. If you have some examples on a public repository, like GitHub, send the link and stand over what’ve done.

This is important as a lot of coding is done in teams or in pairs so if your code is not tidy, and as efficient as possible, it can make it hard for your teammates to come in and add code or debug it.

We are seeing an increase in pair programming during the interview process so this is a skill set that companies rank as extremely important.

Do You Test Your Code?

Everyone knows that you need to test and debug your code to make sure it works properly but why is this important to employers?

If you constantly test your own code before releasing it, it shows that you care about the quality of your code. This also demonstrates that you are reliable and have a good work ethic.

Show That You Are A Problem-Solver!

Solving problems is at the core of almost all software engineer jobs. This is a vital skill that employers are really interested in.

A good way to approach this question is to show your passion for problem-solving and to give a few examples. Talking though exactly what you did, and how you overcame the issue, will give a good insight into how to work and think.

It’s also important to be able to communicate these complex ideas in an easy-to-understand way. Remember that the person or people to have the final say on hiring you may not be technically-minded at all. Being able to communicate well could also demonstrate your ability to lead a team and run a project effectively.

Be Passionate.

What passion projects are you working on? Are you a life-long learner? Do you go to meetups and events? Chatting about these things can really show that you eat, breathe and sleep code. People like to work with passionate, enthusiastic people so make sure this is known.
